As lots of you will know, we at St John’s love to get folk together, connecting people through a variety of different activities and groups, to have a laugh and on occasion make a right fool of ourselves; so, we decided the perfect thing for this would be to hold an SJB Adult Rounders Tournament – what’s the worst that could happen? (see end of paragraph 5 below!!!)

Thanks to our ‘Rounders Officials’ Adam and Joanna, the pitch had been mowed and marked out to precision, the rules were clear, the teams were divvied up and the rain was staying off (for now).  “So let the games begin!!!”  There was a mix of ages playing, from youthful 18 year olds all the way up to the young at heart’s in their 70s and everyone embraced the challenge and team spirit wonderfully.  Others just came to watch and enjoy the evening, shouting words of encouragement (or simply laughing at people) along the way.

There were plenty of big hits, slogs and catches to be commended, with some rising to the occasion to show off their epic rounder’s skills (and some not so much) and in the end it was the RED team that triumphed and lifted the trophy.

Big shout out to the Burscough Roses Netball Team, who came along to help bump up the sporting talent on the field.  It was really nice to have you join us and we look forward to you hosting a Netball Tournament next, if you are brave enough to have us!

Although this evening was a lot of fun, all of our ‘athletes’ took their role very seriously and there was plenty of competitive rivalry and friendly banter between teams.  One of our brave players was so dedicated to the cause, that he ended the night by tripping over and breaking his arm – yet despite this, he headed out to hospital laughing and with a big smile on his face.  We all wish you a speedy recovery Ken!

All round it was a really enjoyable night and if you didn’t make it this time, I would definitely encourage you to give it a try in the future, even if you just come along to watch and enjoy the game.  So, thank you and well done to all those who took part.  Here’s to the next one!
