What do Neeps, good laughs and dubious Scottish accents have in common? Answer – they are the recipe for a successful Burns night inspired St John’s Thank you night for the wonderful volunteers!
Anyone who gives even just a small part of their time and those that have volunteered for years or even just days were invited to a Thank You celebration on Saturday 25th January and with a strong clan of Scots in the congregation – we of course celebrated Burns Night with many dressed in Tartan.
The aromas coming from the Church Hall were tremendous. We tried Haggis, Neeps and Tatties along with Scottish tablet for pudding. We had a photo quiz made up of various famous Scottish people from Andy Murray to the fictitious Miss Hoolie from the children’s programme, Balamory and we even put a Scottish movie on in the back for the kids!
The gates then opened to some incredible Scottish accents from some people most definitely NOT from Scotland. Our Vicar Elliott was Quiz Master and in his best *or insert other adjective here* Scottish accent described various Scottish words that we had to guess what their meaning was.
A lovely time of fellowship and sharing conversation continued well into the evening. Like it says in Ephesians 2:10, “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Volunteers make up the body of the Church. 1 Peter 4:10 says that “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” Here at St John’s, we have so many faithful people with such a wide range of gifts and talents and it is lovely to see how God uses each and everyone of us and our gifts to serve our Church family.
